Our goal for this sauce was to create a strong smoky BBQ sauce that can be used for a variety of meats. This was very quick and easy to make with common items other than the Hickory Liquid Smoke (check your local grocery’s BBQ sauce aisle for this). While we enjoyed it, next time we’ll be trying a couple things differently, see below for why!
– Cornstarch and water (optional for a thicker sauce)
Very easy dish to make, but there was a little too much tomato flavor for us. We would suggest doubling the ketchup and using no paste. Also, try a white onion rather than a red - red onions bring out other flavors more in dishes!
– Start with heating olive oil on medium
– Once heated, add garlic and onion – cook until onions are somewhat clear / transparent but not fully cooked through
– Add 8 oz of beer SLOWLY as it can splash and foam. Drink rest of beer.
– Set heat to medium-LOW and let beer reduce for about 20 minutes, 25 TOPS usually
– Add and mix in all other ingredients – stir well.
– Once evenly mixed, use a blender to crush it all up until your sauce is smooth (no chunks).
– Pro Tip: If you want a thicker sauce, mix cornstarch and water separately to create a slush, then add this into your sauce as needed. DO NOT mix directly in the sauce
